Laurie has extensive domestic and international research experience in the area of epidemiology. Her professional record includes work overseas with programs sponsored by the World Health Organization, the United Nations Development Program, and governments of developing countries. Domestically she has worked in research programs for the National Institutes of Health, the National Center for Health Statistics and the American Petroleum Institute. She holds a medical degree from the University of Newcastle–upon–Tyne in the UK and an MS in biostatistics and epidemiology from Georgetown University. She is a practicing physician, is board certified in internal medicine and is a member of the American College of Physicians.
